Acupuncture Q&A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a technique that involves inserting ultra-fine needles into specific points in the body to relieve pain and restore function.

In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture works by restoring the flow of Qi (energy) in the body. Western practitioners believe it stimulates the central nervous system to improve circulation, release endorphins, and encourage the body’s natural healing process.

What types of pain can acupuncture help relieve?

Shoreline Acupuncture uses acupuncture to address many acute and chronic pain conditions, including:

  • Back pain
  • Herniated discs
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Sciatica
  • Post-surgical pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Low back pain from pregnancy
  • Neck pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Headaches
  • Bursitis
  • Ligament and tendon tears
  • Patellar chondromalacia
  • Hip pain
  • Shoulder pain

With an orthopedic approach to care, Lisa aims to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and restore range of motion for patients experiencing long-lasting pain.

Can acupuncture treat other medical conditions?

As a licensed acupuncturist, Lisa can help relieve the symptoms of many conditions with acupuncture, including:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Digestive issues
  • Low immunity
  • Depression
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sinus problems
  • Allergies
  • Insomnia
  • Neuropathy

Acupuncture can also complement traditional Western treatments, such as medication, lifestyle and nutritional counseling, and therapy, to provide a holistic treatment approach.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture’s ultra-fine needles limit pain from treatment, but everybody has different pain thresholds. Most people experience pressure upon insertion, and any pain you do feel should subside quickly.

Is acupuncture safe?

When performed by an experienced and qualified acupuncturist like Lisa, acupuncture is safe and effective. Minor bruising, bleeding, and soreness at the insertion sites may occur but typically resolve during or shortly after you visit Shoreline Acupuncture. Lisa uses hair-thin, sterile, single-use needles to prevent infection and keep you safe.

How often should I schedule acupuncture sessions?

Acupuncture is most effective with consistency. Lisa typically recommends starting with sessions twice a week before assessing your progress. Scheduling sessions too far apart can diminish acupuncture’s efficacy. After evaluating your conditions and progress, Lisa may adjust the treatment plan to include less frequent sessions.

Most clients return at least once a week for maintenance treatments until their pain or condition resolves.
